It is my pleasure to be the English language teacher for Regional School
District #10. In the past 16 years, I've worked with students from all over the world...from China and Korea to Russia, Poland, Greece and Italy to countries in South and Central America, as well as many other locations. It is fascinating to meet students from all over the world and watch their English language skills progress as they become comfortable with our traditions.
It is also gratifying to watch our students embrace their new friends and show interest in their cultures. Our students have shown those from warm climates how to make their first snowball, learned how playing cricket is similar to playing baseball and occasionally even sampled birthday treats popular on the other side of the world.
Students learning English enter our schools with varying levels of proficiency in the language. Some have studied English in their home countries or spent some time in a different U.S. school and are working to fine tune their grammar skills and increase their vocabulary. Others have very little experience with English and need to begin with basic vocabulary and grammar. All students work to increase their communication skills in all communication areas - speaking, listening, reading and writing.
I'm fortunate to have a close working relationship with classroom teachers so I can incorporate skills and concepts being studied in the students' classrooms with lessons designed to expand their English language skills.
There is so much to learn when beginning life in a new country, I'm never at a loss for lesson ideas!
